About

Kegan Creek Cabin offers a remote wilderness lodging experience on Prince of Wales Island within the Tongass National Forest. This 12-by-12-foot Pan Abode cedar log cabin is situated on Kegan Creek near the outlet of Kegan Lake, set back in a forest of Sitka spruce and western hemlock. The cabin is approximately half a mile from a saltwater cove on Moira Sound and is accessible only by float plane at high tide or by boat with a subsequent half-mile hike from Kegan Cove Cabin. The cabin sleeps up to six people on wooden bunkbeds (no mattresses provided) and includes a wood stove for heating, a table with benches, a cooking bench, and a broom. A rowboat with oars is provided for exploring Kegan Lake, though guests must bring their own long-shaft motor if desired. An outhouse with vault toilet is located outside. Salmon runs draw both anglers and black bears to Kegan Creek, making it prime territory for fishing and wildlife viewing. Rainbow trout, cutthroat trout, Dolly Varden, and various salmon species can be found in nearby waters. A half-mile trail along the creek connects the cabin to both Kegan Cove and Kegan Lake. The area supports abundant wildlife including Sitka black-tailed deer, black bears, and eagles. Guests must be prepared for remote conditions and bring all supplies including water, food, sleeping gear, cooking equipment, lantern, toilet paper, garbage bags, and firewood or biobricks.

Directions

Accessible by float plane at high tide (30 air miles from Ketchikan, 51 air miles from Craig) or by boat to Kegan Cove followed by a half-mile hike along Kegan Creek. A mooring buoy is available in the bay on a first-come, first-served basis. Refer to USGS Craig A-1 map.
