Open — Open year-round on a first-come, first-served basis. The campground is actively managed from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Winter access is dependent on weather and road conditions. No reservations accepted.

Isabella & Lost Girl Fires- Road and Trail Closure

Due to the Isabella and Lost Girl Fires on the Cabinet Ranger District, a closure order is now in effect for a portion National Forest System Road 407, National Forest System Trail #407A, and Trail #646 (St. Paul Lake Trail).

Spruce Fire Road Closure-Updated

Due to the Spruce and Spruce Ridge Fires on the Three Rivers Ranger District, a closure order is still in effect. However, the original order has been terminated and replaced with an updated closure.

South Meadow Creek Fire Closure

Due to the South Meadow Creek Fire, a closure order is now in effect for National Forest System Roads #524 and #5961, starting at the junction of the two roads to their respective ending points.

Kootenai Rails Trail Closure

A portion of the Kootenai Rails Trail (NFS Trail #255) on the Rexford Ranger District is now temporarily closed during construction activities on the Tobacco River Bridge, which is over the trail, and to protect the public on the trail from potential debris impacts.

Kilbrennan Lake Campground is located approximately 8 air miles from the Montana-Idaho border in the Kootenai National Forest. At an elevation of 2,917 feet, this small campground offers 7 primitive campsites with tables and fire rings along Kilbrennan Lake. The campground roads and parking spurs are native soil, suitable for smaller vehicles and trailers. The lake is surrounded by dense conifers and forest vegetation, creating a peaceful backcountry setting. A boat ramp developed for smaller boats provides lake access for fishing and non-motorized boating. The lake is known for late spring fishing opportunities for cutthroat and rainbow trout. Amenities are basic, with vault toilets provided but no drinking water available on-site. Access requires traveling west from Troy on Highway 2, then north on East Side Road 176, and finally along Kilbrennan Lake Road 2394 for approximately 8.5 miles. The campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis with a 16-day stay limit. It's managed from Memorial Day through Labor Day but remains accessible year-round when weather and road conditions permit.

Directions

From Troy, travel west on Highway 2 for 3 miles to East Side Road 176. Turn right and follow Road 176 north for 2 miles to Kilbrennan Lake Road 2394. Turn right and follow for approximately 8.5 miles to the campground entrance.
