About

Wolverine Lakes Dispersed Site 19 is a primitive backcountry camping location in the Ten Lakes Scenic Area, a 14,945-acre designated Wilderness Study Area in the northeastern corner of Kootenai National Forest. Accessible only by hiking in from Forest Roads 114 or 319 off Highway 93 near Eureka, this remote site sits in rugged alpine terrain shaped by ancient glaciers, surrounded by peaks reaching over 7,800 feet and numerous high mountain lakes. The Ten Lakes area is managed to preserve wilderness characteristics, with no motorized vehicles or equipment allowed except over-snow vehicles in winter. Campers must pack in all supplies and pack out all trash, as this is a designated Pack In/Pack Out area. The terrain features Engelmann spruce, subalpine fir, lodgepole pine, and alpine larch forests, with abundant wildflowers in spring and summer. Wildlife including black bears, grizzly bears, deer, and elk inhabit the area. This is true wilderness camping for experienced backcountry users. Proper food storage is essential in bear country, with food suspended at least 10 feet above ground and 4 feet from tree trunks. Campers should use existing fire rings where available or backpack stoves, stay on designated trails to protect fragile alpine soils, and practice Leave No Trace principles.

Directions

From Highway 93 near Eureka, take Forest Road 114 or 319 west approximately 20 miles to trailhead access points. Requires hiking 3.5 miles on Wolverine Lakes Trail to reach the lakes area. Not accessible by vehicle.
