About

Wolverine Lakes Dispersed Site 18 sits within the Ten Lakes Scenic Area, a 14,945-acre wilderness study area managed to preserve its wilderness characteristics. This remote dispersed site is located in the high alpine country of the Whitefish Mountains near the Canadian border, where glaciers carved deep cirques and high basins sheltering numerous alpine lakes. The area features spectacular scenery with peaks reaching over 7,800 feet, forested slopes of Engelmann spruce, subalpine fir, lodgepole pine, and alpine larch, and abundant wildflowers in summer. The Wolverine Lakes area includes an old border patrolman's cabin and turquoise alpine pools, providing excellent opportunities for fishing and primitive camping. This is true backcountry dispersed camping in a pack-in/pack-out area. Motorized vehicles are prohibited in the scenic area except for over-snow vehicles during winter months. The area is accessed via Forest Roads 114 and 319 off Highway 93 near Eureka, approximately 20 miles from the highway. Wildlife is abundant, including black bears, grizzly bears, deer, and a variety of alpine species. The fragile high-elevation soils retain impacts long-term, so visitors should practice Leave No Trace principles, use designated campsites where available, and properly store food to protect against bears.
