About

Wolverine Lakes Dispersed Site 10 is situated in the heart of the Ten Lakes Scenic Area, a 14,945-acre wilderness study area in the extreme northwest corner of Montana's Kootenai National Forest. Designated as a scenic area in 1964 and later as a wilderness study area in 1977, this region is managed to preserve its wilderness characteristics. The site is located near Wolverine Lakes in rugged alpine terrain carved by ancient glaciers, with high cirques and rim-rocked basins sheltering numerous alpine lakes. The Ten Lakes area is characterized by peaks reaching over 7,800 feet, forested slopes of Engelmann spruce, subalpine fir, lodgepole pine, and alpine larch, with abundant wildflowers and huckleberries in summer. Access to the dispersed site requires hiking in from trailheads accessed via Forest Roads 114 and 319, approximately 20 miles off Highway 93 near Eureka. An old cabin used by early border patrolmen still stands near Wolverine Lakes. This is a pack-in, pack-out area with no facilities, and campers should practice Leave No Trace principles in this fragile high-country environment.

Directions

From Fortine, travel north 3 miles on US Highway 93. Turn onto Grave Creek Road 114 and follow for 14 miles. Turn onto Road 319 and follow for 11.4 miles, then turn onto Wolverine Road 7086 and follow for 1.5 miles. A stock loading ramp, hitch rail, and parking for 4 vehicles is located at the trailhead.
