About
Wilderness Ridge Wilderness Campground rewards backpackers with sheltered, forested campsites and spectacular views into McKittrick Canyon after a demanding climb. The Permian Reef Trail meanders up 2,000 feet from the McKittrick Canyon Trailhead to the ridge top, where a sudden transition from exposed rock to trees marks the campground area. The 9-mile round-trip trek takes 3-4 hours each way and is best attempted in winter, spring, or fall when conditions are cooler. This is a true backcountry experience with no amenities. Campers must carry all water, pack out all trash, and use a landfill-safe commercial toilet bag system for human waste. Campfires are strictly prohibited throughout the park; only containerized fuel stoves are permitted. Pets are not allowed on trails or in the backcountry. A Wilderness Use Permit is required and can be reserved up to three months in advance through Recreation.gov for a $6 reservation fee plus $6 per person per night. Walk-up permits are available at the Pine Springs Visitor Center on a first-come, first-served basis. Reserved permits must be picked up in person by 3:30 p.m. Mountain Time up to 48 hours before your trip.
