About

Wassataquoik Lean-to offers a rustic backcountry camping experience within Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument. The site features a traditional lean-to structure, a raised three-sided log shelter with a roof that provides basic protection from the elements. Located along the International Appalachian Trail near the scenic Wassataquoik Stream, this primitive campsite is accessible only by foot or bicycle, approximately 0.9 miles from the Wassataquoik Gate or 1.4 miles from the Barnard Mountain Trailhead. This is a true wilderness camping experience with no amenities provided. There are no toilets, water sources, or trash services at the site. Campers must be self-sufficient and practice Leave No Trace principles, carrying out all trash and waste. Campfires are only permitted with a valid Maine Forest Service campfire permit, which can be obtained free of charge. Camp stoves are allowed without a permit. Note that untreated firewood from out of state is banned to protect against invasive species. The lean-to accommodates one party and can be reserved through Recreation.gov during the operating season. This site is not ADA accessible due to the hiking or biking access required. The monument's backcountry offers opportunities to experience the remote forests of northern Maine, with possibilities for wildlife viewing including moose, black bears, and various bird species.
