About

Big Seboeis Campsite offers a true backcountry camping experience in Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument. This primitive walk-in campsite sits next to the scenic East Branch of the Penobscot River and can only be reached by hiking or boating. The most direct hiking route is approximately 6.3 miles from Wassataquoik Gate parking area, following the International Appalachian Trail and requiring a ford of Wassataquoik Stream before continuing on Ed Wherler Trail and Telos Tote Trail. Alternatively, paddlers can access the site by boating in from Lunksoos Campground just downstream. This is a true primitive site with minimal amenities. A pit toilet (outhouse) is located approximately 200 feet from the campsite. There is no potable water available, so visitors must bring all their own water or have the ability to treat river water. The single tent site is free and available by reservation through Recreation.gov during the operating season, with unreserved sites available first-come, first-served on the day of arrival. Campfires require a valid Maine Forest Service permit and must use locally sourced firewood. Camp stoves are permitted without a permit.
