About
Lunksoos Mountain Lean-to offers a rugged backcountry camping experience in Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument. Located along the International Appalachian Trail, this remote shelter requires a 6.3-mile hike from the Wassataquoik Gate trailhead, making it ideal for experienced backpackers seeking solitude in Maine's north woods. The lean-to provides basic shelter with a picnic table and firepit. Vault toilets are available on-site, and non-potable water can be accessed nearby. All scented items must be stored in bear-resistant canisters as there are no food lockers at this location. Campfires require a free permit from the Maine Forest Service, and untreated firewood from out of state is banned to protect against invasive species. The surrounding area features mountains, pristine waterways, and extensive forests that provide habitat for moose, black bear, Canada lynx, and diverse bird species. The monument is an International Dark Sky Sanctuary, offering exceptional stargazing opportunities. Roads within the monument are typically open to motorized vehicles from late May to mid-November, with access by foot or bicycle during winter months.
