About
Katahdin Brook Lean-to is the closest hike-in campsite in Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument, located just 0.4 miles from the Barnard Mountain Trailhead along the International Appalachian Trail. A short spur trail leads to this secluded site featuring a wooden lean-to shelter, firepit, grass clearing, and composting toilet. The elevated lean-to structure requires a step up to enter and can accommodate up to 6 people. The site is nestled in a rich wildlife habitat where moose, deer, butterflies, and a variety of birds are commonly observed, making it an excellent location for nature enthusiasts. The peaceful sound of Katahdin Brook can be heard throughout the campsite. Visitors must hike down a short downhill with uneven terrain to reach the site, as there is no vehicle access or parking at the campsite itself. Campers should come prepared as there is no potable water available on-site and no cell phone service. All trash must be packed out following Leave No Trace principles. Campfires are permitted only with a valid Maine Forest Service campfire permit, which can be obtained free of charge from the Maine Forest Service Northern Region Headquarters. Firewood must be obtained locally within 10 miles of the campsite, and out-of-state firewood is banned to protect against invasive species.
