About

Kalopa State Recreation Area sits on the verdant slopes of Mauna Kea at 2,000 feet elevation, offering a cool, misty retreat within one of Hawaii's last remaining lowland native ʻōhiʻa forests. The tent camping area is set apart from the cabin facilities and provides a peaceful base for exploring the park's easy 0.7-mile interpretive nature trail through old-growth forest. The campground includes restrooms, picnic tables, trash service, and potable water. Hot showers are not available at the campground itself; they are only provided in the duplex rental cabins. The park operates on a permit-only system with all reservations handled through the Explore Outdoor Hawaiʻi portal. Maximum stay is 5 consecutive nights. This is a tent-only camping area with no RV hookups or facilities for large vehicles. The park is open daily from 7:00am to 8:00pm, and all campers must complete a mandatory check-in with staff at 3:00pm.
