About
Kīpahulu Campground occupies a flat, grassy field perched above the rocky coastline in the remote Kīpahulu District of Haleakalā National Park on Maui's east side. The campground is located approximately 64 miles from Kahului via the winding Hāna Highway. With 21 total sites, it offers both vehicle-accessible camping and five walk-in coastal sites that accommodate hammocks. Each site includes a picnic table, and the main drive-in sites feature charcoal grills. The campground provides direct access to some of the park's most popular hiking. The Kūloa Point Loop Trail leads from the campground to views of ʻOheʻo Gulch, while the Pīpīwai Trail climbs 2 miles through a dramatic bamboo forest to 400-foot Waimoku Falls. Swimming in the pools and waterfalls is prohibited. Visitors should prepare for frequent rain and strong sun, as weather conditions change rapidly. Facilities are primitive: four vault toilets are located in two comfort stations, but there are no showers, electrical outlets, or hookups. Potable water is available only at the Visitor Center, roughly 1/8 mile away. Pets are permitted on leash within the campground boundaries and on roads but are prohibited on all trails. The campground is known for its isolation, ocean views, and proximity to Hawaiian cultural sites.
Directions
From Kahului, follow the Hāna Highway (Route 360) approximately 64 miles to the Kīpahulu District. The drive takes 2.5 to 3 hours each way due to narrow roads, one-lane bridges, and winding conditions. Plan to arrive before evening to set up camp. Pack food, water, and supplies as services along the route are limited.
