About
Kipahulu Campground sits in the remote Kipahulu District of Haleakalā National Park on Maui's southeastern coast, accessible via the scenic 64-mile Road to Hana drive from Kahului. The campground occupies an open grassy field with sweeping ocean views along rocky coastal cliffs. Twenty individual sites accommodate tents and vehicles, plus one group site for larger parties. Five walk-in coastal sites are located 0.2 miles from the main loop. The campground serves as a basecamp for exploring the district's dramatic waterfalls and lush rainforest trails. The Pipiwai Trail leads 2 miles through dense bamboo forest to viewpoints of Makahiku Falls and 400-foot Waimoku Falls. The Kuloa Point Loop and Coastline Trail provide coastal hiking access to 'Ohe'o Gulch. The visitor center features historical displays and Junior Ranger programs. Facilities are minimal: four vault toilets in two comfort stations, picnic tables, and charcoal grills at most sites. No water is available at campsites; the nearest water station is at the visitor center. Campers should bring all necessary water and supplies. The nearest stores are 10 miles away in Hana. Heavy rain is common, and mosquitos can be intense. Camping is limited to 3 nights per 30-day period.
Directions
From Kahului, drive 64 miles along Highway 360, the Road to Hana. The campground is located near mile marker 42 in the Kipahulu District of Haleakalā National Park. Plan to arrive before evening to set up camp. The drive takes several hours due to winding roads and numerous one-lane bridges.
