Special Weather Statement issued May 23 at 12:09PM EDT by NWS Gray ME

12:09 PM — 10:00 PM

* The warm air temperatures this weekend in the mid 60s may cause people to underestimate the dangers of the cold water temperatures which are currently only in the mid 50s across Sebago Lake and Lake Winnipesaukee, and in the mid 50s in the regions smaller lakes and rivers. * The cold water temperatures can quickly cause hypothermia to anyone immersed in the water. When the water temperature is below 60 degrees, the average submerged person could loose dexterity within minutes and be unable to accomplish simple tasks. Anyone on small boats, canoes, or kayaks should plan accordingly if recreating this weekend and use extreme caution to avoid this threat. Paddle smart from the start and always wear your life jacket! * Generally light and variable winds shift to southerly today. Winds will be breezy this afternoon with some gusts up to 25 mph. If boating on large bodies of water, these strong winds can increase the likelihood of overturning your boat, canoe, or kayak due to increased wave heights.

About

Umbagog Lake State Park sits at the southern end of Umbagog Lake in Errol, New Hampshire, adjacent to the Umbagog National Wildlife Refuge. The campground offers two distinct camping experiences: a developed base area with 27 sites featuring electric and water hookups, and 33 primitive remote campsites accessible only by boat, providing true wilderness camping around the lake's shoreline. The park is renowned for wildlife viewing opportunities, with frequent sightings of loons, bald eagles, moose, and river otters. The base area includes a beach for swimming, boat launch, marina with canoe and kayak rentals, and a camp store. Remote sites are carry-in, carry-out with no trash service. The park also features cabins both at the base area and in remote locations. Umbagog Lake offers excellent fishing for landlocked salmon, lake trout, and brook trout, and has been recognized as one of New England's top kayaking destinations. All campsites include picnic tables and fire pits, though firewood cannot be brought into the park and must be purchased on-site. The campground provides a unique opportunity to experience the Great North Woods region with both comfort and wilderness options.
