Special Weather Statement issued May 24 at 2:21AM EDT by NWS Gray ME

2:21 AM — 12:00 PM

* The warm air temperatures later this Holiday weekend in the mid 60s may cause people to underestimate the dangers of the cold water temperatures which are currently only in the mid 50s across Sebago Lake and Lake Winnipesaukee, and in the mid 50s in the regions smaller lakes and rivers. * The cold water temperatures can quickly cause hypothermia to anyone immersed in the water. When the water temperature is below 60 degrees, the average submerged person could loose dexterity within minutes and be unable to accomplish simple tasks. Anyone on small boats, canoes, or kayaks should plan accordingly if recreating this weekend and use extreme caution to avoid this threat. Paddle smart from the start and always wear your life jacket! * Winds will be breezy this afternoon with some gusts up to 25 mph across parts of the area. If boating on large bodies of water, these strong winds can increase the likelihood of overturning your boat, canoe, or kayak due to increased wave heights.

About

Milan Hill State Park sits atop a scenic hill in New Hampshire's Great North Woods region, approximately ten miles north of Berlin in Coös County. This primitive campground offers an authentic backcountry experience with modern convenience, featuring 4 tent platforms, 4 yurts, and 2 Adirondack-style lean-to shelters. The park's crown jewel is its historic fire tower, which provides spectacular 360-degree views of the White Mountains, as well as mountain ranges in Maine, Vermont, and Canada, making it one of the premier spots for sunrise and sunset viewing in northern New Hampshire. The campground maintains a rustic character with basic but adequate facilities. All sites include fire rings and picnic tables, and potable water is available on-site. The park features pit toilets but no showers or flush toilets. Yurts accommodate up to 6 people but sleep 4 comfortably, with no electricity or heat provided. The location serves as an excellent base camp for exploring the surrounding Great North Woods, with nearby opportunities for hiking, fishing, canoeing, kayaking, and wildlife viewing along the Androscoggin River valley. Milan Hill State Park is a pet-friendly facility that welcomes both tent campers and small RVs, though the primitive nature and limited driveway lengths make it better suited for tent camping and smaller rigs. The park's remote hilltop location offers limited cell service, adding to the sense of wilderness immersion while still maintaining accessibility via paved roads.
