About
Trails End Campground occupies a stunning location at the northern terminus of the Gunflint Trail, 57 miles from Grand Marais. The campground provides access to four Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness entry points (54, 55, J, and K), making it a premier staging area for canoe trips into the BWCAW. Two canoe launches and one boat launch serve paddlers heading onto Seagull, Gull, and Saganaga Lakes. The campground features 32 sites spread across bedrock outcrops among white and red pine. The 2007 Ham Lake Fire burned through the area in a mosaic pattern, leaving some sites heavily impacted while others remained untouched. Today the burned areas are regenerating, offering visitors a unique opportunity to witness forest succession. Many sites offer water views or direct water access, though some have steep drop-offs. Wildlife viewing is exceptional here. Bald eagles, osprey, loons, and moose frequent the area. Fishing opportunities abound for walleye, northern pike, smallmouth bass, and lake trout. Blueberries grow abundantly on the forest floor. Commercial services including canoe rentals, outfitting, showers, groceries, and gear are available nearby. BWCAW day use and overnight permits can be obtained at the campground when quotas allow.
