About

Tailrace Park sits at the base of John H. Kerr Dam, where the tailrace waters flow into the Roanoke River. This semi-wooded day-use area managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers provides excellent access to fishing and wildlife viewing. The park is particularly notable for bald eagle sightings, especially during winter months when over a dozen eagles may be observed from the small pier. The park features a large picnic shelter available for reservation through Recreation.gov, suitable for birthday parties, reunions, and group gatherings of up to 250 people with parking for 50 vehicles. A handicap-accessible kayak launch provides paddlers direct access to the Roanoke River, and a boat ramp serves motorized watercraft. Flush toilets are available during peak season. Important: This is a day-use facility only. Overnight camping is prohibited. The park is free to visit and open daily, though the picnic shelter requires advance reservation for exclusive use.
