About

Tailrace Park occupies a prime location immediately below John H. Kerr Dam where the Roanoke River continues its journey from the massive 50,000-acre reservoir. This semi-wooded park is particularly renowned among birdwatchers and wildlife enthusiasts for its exceptional bald eagle viewing opportunities, especially during winter months when ring-billed gulls and other waterfowl congregate in large numbers. The turbulent waters below the dam attract diverse species year-round, making the small fishing pier a popular vantage point. The campground provides access to the Virginia Blueways Trail through a wheelchair-accessible kayak launch, allowing paddlers to explore the Roanoke River as it flows toward Lake Gaston. Anglers can target species including largemouth bass, striped bass, crappie, and multiple catfish varieties. The surrounding John H. Kerr Reservoir system offers 26 Wildlife Management Areas totaling over 10,000 acres for hunting, hiking, and additional wildlife viewing. The park's riverside setting combines convenient amenities with the natural beauty of Virginia's Piedmont region, located approximately 17 miles south of South Hill.
