About
Snag Lake Campground is located five miles north of Bassetts Station on Gold Lake Highway in the heart of the Lakes Basin Recreation Area within Tahoe National Forest. At 6,600 feet elevation, this free campground offers 12 undesignated campsites on a first-come, first-served basis with space for small trailers. Most sites provide views of Snag Lake. The campground features vault toilets and access to lake water that must be purified or filtered before drinking. Non-motorized boats can be hand-launched at the lake. The area is surrounded by an abundance of beautiful high mountain lakes with varying accessibility, along with scenic rugged geological features including granitic ridges and glacially serrated rock outcroppings formed by ancient glacial activity. Gold Lake Highway accesses dozens of sapphire-colored mountain lakes and provides a spectacular backdrop with dramatic views of the Sierra Buttes. The road closes seasonally for winter and is groomed for snowmobiling during the snow season. This lightly used campground offers a peaceful base for exploring the Lakes Basin's hiking, fishing, and scenic beauty.
