About

Snag Lake Campground is a free, primitive campground in the Yuba River Ranger District of Tahoe National Forest. The 12 undesignated sites are available first-come, first-served, with most offering views of Snag Lake. The area features scenic high mountain lakes, granitic ridges, and glacially carved rock outcroppings characteristic of the northern Sierra Nevada. Facilities are basic: vault toilets are provided, but there is no potable water. Campers must filter or treat water from the lake. Small trailers can be accommodated, though the campground is not suitable for large RVs. Non-motorized boats are allowed on Snag Lake with hand-launch access only. The campground operates seasonally from late May through mid-October, weather permitting. Check-in is at 2:00 p.m., check-out at noon, with quiet hours from 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.

Directions

From Highway 49 at Sierra City, travel 4.5 miles to Bassetts Station. Turn left on Gold Lake Highway and continue 5-6 miles to the campground. From Highway 89 North to 49 North, drive 13 miles west to Bassetts Station, turn right on Gold Lake Highway, and continue 5 miles.
