Salcha River State Recreation Site
Open — Open year-round for camping and recreation. Reservations available up to 7 months in advance. 15-day camping limit.
Special Weather Statement issued April 17 at 1:24PM AKDT by NWS Fairbanks AK
Wet snow will develop early Sunday morning and continue into the afternoon. The snow may be heavy at times resulting in wet, slushy accumulations. By Sunday evening, there is a 40% chance that the snow transitions to rain or a mix of rain and snow in the valleys, including Fairbanks. The rain can also be heavy at times. If there is heavy rain, localized flooding, while not expected, is possible since the ground is still frozen and any standing water has nowhere to go. Late Sunday night and Monday morning, temperatures will drop to near freezing resulting in patches of ice. Any rain will likely transition back to snow showers by Monday morning. Monday afternoon will come with a drying trend, but any wet spots will likely freeze once again Monday night as temperatures drop into the 20s to near 30 Tuesday morning. Travel will likely be most difficult during the Monday and Tuesday commutes. Snowfall totals will range between 2 and 4 inches from Fairbanks to Healy. 3 to 7 inches is expected in the higher terrain around Fairbanks.
About
Salcha River State Recreation Site encompasses 61 acres along the Salcha River, approximately 40 miles southeast of Fairbanks at Mile 323.3 of the Richardson Highway. This riverside park offers 6 wooded campsites with no RV length restrictions, a concrete boat launch, and a rentable public-use cabin. The site serves as a popular weekend getaway for residents of Fairbanks and Delta Junction. The Salcha River provides excellent fishing opportunities throughout the season. King salmon run up the river with peak runs occurring shortly after July 4th, while grayling fishing remains productive year-round. A gravel bar on the east side of the park serves as a popular camping area and features a fish tower for counting salmon migrations. The park also provides river access for landowners along the Salcha and Tanana Rivers. Winter activities include cross-country skiing and snowmobiling up and down the frozen river. With year-round access and a 15-day camping limit, Salcha River State Recreation Site offers a convenient base for outdoor recreation in Alaska's interior.
