Special Weather Statement issued April 17 at 1:24PM AKDT by NWS Fairbanks AK

1:24 PM — April 18th, 4:00 PM

Wet snow will develop early Sunday morning and continue into the afternoon. The snow may be heavy at times resulting in wet, slushy accumulations. By Sunday evening, there is a 40% chance that the snow transitions to rain or a mix of rain and snow in the valleys, including Fairbanks. The rain can also be heavy at times. If there is heavy rain, localized flooding, while not expected, is possible since the ground is still frozen and any standing water has nowhere to go. Late Sunday night and Monday morning, temperatures will drop to near freezing resulting in patches of ice. Any rain will likely transition back to snow showers by Monday morning. Monday afternoon will come with a drying trend, but any wet spots will likely freeze once again Monday night as temperatures drop into the 20s to near 30 Tuesday morning. Travel will likely be most difficult during the Monday and Tuesday commutes. Snowfall totals will range between 2 and 4 inches from Fairbanks to Healy. 3 to 7 inches is expected in the higher terrain around Fairbanks.

About

Cripple Creek Campground is a BLM-managed campground situated along the Chatanika River in the White Mountains National Recreation Area. The campground features 12 universal design campsites and 6 walk-in tent sites available on a first-come, first-served basis. Each vehicle site includes a parking area, picnic table, and fire ring. A riverside day use area provides fishing access to the Chatanika River. A short interpretive trail winds through tall white spruce trees along the river between the day use area and the campground. The Chatanika River offers a class I-II float trip of approximately 25 miles to the Upper Chatanika State Recreation Site at milepost 39, though occasional low water and log jams may require portaging. The campground serves as an access point for exploring the White Mountains National Recreation Area, including nearby attractions like Nome Creek Valley, Quartz Creek Trail, Table Top Trail, Pinnell Mountain Trail, and the Beaver Creek Wild and Scenic River put-in. Summer activities include hiking, fishing, and floating on the Chatanika River.
