About

Red Cloud Campground is a small, primitive Forest Service campground tucked into a Ponderosa pine forest at 7,600 feet elevation in the Mountainair Ranger District of Cibola National Forest. The five established sites offer a peaceful retreat near the historic Red Cloud mining district, with each site equipped with a picnic table and fire ring with grill. This is a no-frills camping experience: there is no potable water on-site, so campers must bring their own supply. Vault toilets are available, though services may be limited at times. The campground is free and operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no reservations required. The area sees its heaviest use during fall hunting season when the surrounding national forest draws hunters seeking deer and wild turkey. Outside of hunting season, the campground typically remains quiet and uncrowded. The sites feature long back-in spurs that can accommodate larger RVs, though the primitive nature of the facility means no hookups or dump stations are available.

Directions

From Corona, New Mexico, head west on US Route 54. Turn south onto County Road A019 (Forest Service Road 161) and follow it approximately 14 miles to the campground. The turnoff coordinates are approximately 34.142606 N, 105.675842 W. Do not rely solely on GPS navigation to find the correct turnoff.
