About
Red Cloud Campground is a small, primitive campground in Cibola National Forest's Mountainair Ranger District, situated at 7,600 feet elevation in a scenic Ponderosa pine forest. The campground offers 5 back-in sites suitable for tents and RVs, with most sites accommodating full-sized rigs. Located approximately 12 miles west of Corona, New Mexico, the campground sits near an old mining district in the Gallinas Mountains. This free, first-come, first-served campground operates year-round and provides basic amenities including picnic tables and fire pits at each site, along with vault toilets. Campers must bring their own water as no potable water is available on-site. The setting is particularly quiet outside of fall hunting season, when the campground experiences heavy use from hunters. The surrounding Ponderosa forest provides opportunities for hiking, wildlife viewing, and exploring the area's mining history. The campground's primitive nature and remote location make it ideal for campers seeking solitude and a true backcountry experience. Visitors should come prepared with adequate supplies and be aware that services may be reduced, with no trash service provided. The high elevation offers cooler temperatures during summer months, making it a pleasant escape from lower desert elevations.
