About
Baxter Environmental Camp is a primitive walk-in campground in Humboldt Redwoods State Park, offering two secluded campsites under second-growth redwoods along the south side of Bull Creek. Located on Mattole Road about 6 miles west of the Avenue of the Giants, the campground requires campers to register at a staffed entrance station where they receive a combination for the parking area gate. From the parking area, it's a short walk of 50 to 200 yards to reach the campsites. Each site includes a picnic table, fire ring, and bear locker for food storage, as the area is located in black bear country. The camp provides chemical toilets and untreated water. This environmental camp offers a peaceful, more natural camping experience compared to the park's drive-in campgrounds, combining elements of car camping and backpacking without requiring extensive hiking. Humboldt Redwoods State Park encompasses over 53,000 acres with 17,000 acres of old-growth coast redwood forest, the largest remaining contiguous old-growth redwood forest in the world. The park features the scenic 32-mile Avenue of the Giants, numerous hiking trails, and opportunities to experience towering ancient redwoods.
