About

Ponderosa Group Campground is a developed group camping area in the Lake Isabel Recreation Area of San Isabel National Forest, situated at 8,600 feet elevation in the Wet Mountains of southern Colorado. Built by the Civilian Conservation Corps, Lake Isabel is one of the few Colorado lakes developed solely for recreation. The 40-acre lake is stocked with brown and brook trout, and St. Charles Creek flowing nearby offers additional fishing opportunities. The campground features a single reservable group site with capacity for 60 overnight guests and up to 28 vehicles. Amenities include a covered picnic shelter seating 25-30 people, a group-sized charcoal grill, eight individual campfire rings, a volleyball court, and horseshoe pit. Vault toilets, drinking water from a hand pump, and trash dumpsters are provided. The site has full shade with a paved back-in driveway suitable for tents, trailers, and RVs. Recreation options abound: kayaking and canoeing on the lake, fishing for trout, and hiking the pleasant shoreline trail. Motorized trails including Cisneros, St. Charles, and Snowslide provide access for ATVs and motorcycles into the heart of the Wet Mountains. A nearby lodge offers boat rentals, groceries, and a restaurant.
