About

Located on the shores of the Missouri River just above Fort Randall Dam, North Point Recreation Area provides a spectacular river view. Lewis and Clark came up the river in late-August, early-September in 1804. In this area, they saw their first prairie dogs, which they called "barking squirrels." They were also told to watch for an infrequent phenomenon called "burning bluffs," where the shale ignites and smokes. From the beach, cool off in the water, or see if the fish--walleye, northern pike, bass, crappie and catfish--are biting. Bike or hike on the North Point trail. It's rated easy, with a few moderate grades. Checkout a game for fun and bring a picnic. You'll find a floating fuel dock and convenience store at The Fort Randall Marina onsite at North Point Recreation Area. Modern-day visitors can follow in the footsteps of Lewis and Clark and explore the area. All campsites have electric hookups, with access to a dump station and restrooms equipped with flush toilets and showers. Cabins, open year-round, have a set of bunk beds and a double bed to accommodate four people. Sleep comfortably with air-conditioning and heating. Although cooking is not allowed indoors, a picnic table and fire grate give you outdoor options.
