About
Monroe Lake, managed by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, encompasses 23,952 acres including the state's largest lake at 10,750 acres. The primary camping area at Paynetown State Recreation Area offers 320 campsites divided into electric and non-electric loops, accommodating both RVs and tent campers. The campground provides modern amenities including flush restrooms, showers, and a dump station during the main season. Located approximately 10 miles southeast of Bloomington, the property offers extensive recreational opportunities including two swimming beaches with mobility mats for accessibility, nine boat launch ramps, fishing piers, and a marina with gas sales. The interpretive center near the park entrance provides educational programs, and multiple hiking trails ranging from easy to moderate difficulty wind through the forested recreation areas. A seasonal camp store operates during peak months, and boat rentals are available on-site. The lake is renowned for bass fishing and provides both open water and no-wake zones for various watercraft. Additional facilities include picnic areas with reservable shelterhouses, playgrounds, and waterskiing areas. The property consists of nine State Recreation Areas with Paynetown and Fairfax being the most developed for camping and day-use activities.
