About
Vigilante Campground is located approximately 24 miles northeast of Helena in the Big Belt Mountains at an elevation of 4,500 feet. This 7-acre campground is situated in a timbered area along Trout Creek at the end of Trout Creek Road, accessed via Highway 280 through the small community of York. The campground offers a rustic camping experience with vault toilets but no potable water available on-site. The campground provides direct access to two notable trails: the Hanging Valley National Recreation Trail and the scenic Trout Creek Canyon Trail, which runs approximately three miles along a deep limestone canyon. The area is popular for hiking and receives heavy use during the operating season. Due to the narrow access road and campground layout, the maximum trailer length is limited to 16 feet, making this more suitable for tent campers and smaller RVs. Vigilante Campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no advance reservations. Sites are $15 per night for a single unit, with an additional $5 per night for extra vehicles. Interagency Senior and Access Pass holders receive a 50% discount on the campsite fee. The campground is pet-friendly with leashed pets welcome.
