About

Midway Campground sits within the Imperial Sand Dunes Recreation Area, one of the most visited off-highway vehicle destinations in the United States, drawing over 1.2 million visitors annually. The campground offers primitive camping with basic amenities including vault toilets and dumpsters. The Imperial Sand Dunes, also known as the Algodones Dunes, stretch approximately 40 miles along the eastern edge of Imperial County. The area south of Highway 78 is open to all vehicle types for OHV recreation, while designated wilderness areas restrict motorized access. Campers use Midway as a base for exploring the dunes. Access to Midway Campground is via the Gray's Well Road exit off Interstate 8. Follow Gray's Well Road past the Buttercup Ranger Station and continue west to reach the campground. Permits are required during the busy season from October 1 through April 15, available online at isdpermits.net.
