Gecko Campground

Gecko Campground anchors the Imperial Sand Dunes Recreation Area, the most visited BLM site in the nation with over 1.2 million annual visitors. The campground's paved north and south loops provide access to numerous dispersed camping spots along the edge of the dunes. Vault toilets are stationed throughout both loops. The area is a premier destination for OHV recreation, with direct access to open riding areas south of Highway 78. The campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis year-round with a 14-day stay limit. Recreation permits are required from October 1 through April 15, costing $55/week in advance or $70/week purchased onsite. Season permits are available for $185. From mid-April through September, no permits are required, though extreme summer temperatures make camping challenging during this period. Campers should come prepared for primitive desert camping. There is no potable water, hookups, or dump station at the campground. Trash collection is provided throughout the recreation area. Pets are allowed but must be kept on a leash no longer than six feet. Fires are permitted but burning hazardous materials and using wood pallets or lumber with nails is prohibited.

Directions

From Brawley, California, take Highway 78 east toward the Imperial Sand Dunes. Turn left onto Gecko Road; the campground entrance is on the left side of the road.
