About
Liberty Springs Tent Site is a primitive backcountry camping area built and maintained by the Appalachian Mountain Club, situated on Mt. Liberty along the Liberty Springs Trail, which is also part of the Appalachian Trail. Located just 0.3 miles below the junction with the Franconia Ridge Trail, this high-elevation tent site serves as a strategic base for hikers exploring the Franconia Ridge area and the nearby Pemigewasset Wilderness. The site offers seven small shared platforms suitable for up to two tents each, and three larger group platforms that can accommodate three to five tents. A composting outhouse and dishwashing area are provided, along with metal food boxes for bear protection. The water source is an excellent spring that requires filtering or treatment before use. All camping is on designated platforms, which are the only flat areas at this sloped mountain location. During peak season, typically from late spring through early fall, a caretaker is on-site to manage the facility, maintain the composting privy, and assist hikers. The nightly fee of $15 per person applies when a caretaker is present and must be paid in cash or check. The site operates on a first-come, first-served basis and cannot be reserved. Outside of caretaker season, the site remains accessible for winter camping but facilities are unattended.
