About
Kīholo State Park Reserve is a primitive camping destination on the Big Island's dry Kona coast, located between mile markers 82 and 83 on Highway 19. The campground sits in a shaded kiawe (mesquite) grove along an unimproved gravel access road, fronting an ʻiliʻili (pebble) beach. The area is part of a larger coastal ecosystem that includes Kīholo Bay, anchialine pools, and important Hawaiian cultural sites including petroglyphs. Camping is permitted on weekends only (Friday through Sunday nights) and requires advance reservations through the state's Explore Outdoor Hawaiʻi system. The park gates lock at 7:00 PM and reopen at 7:00 AM, so vehicles cannot enter or leave during those hours. This is a remote area with minimal facilities: portable toilets are provided but there is no potable water, so campers must bring all water and supplies. The bay offers excellent opportunities for snorkeling, swimming, and wildlife viewing. Green sea turtles (honu) frequently rest on the black sand and lava shores, and the calm waters of the bay provide good visibility. Fishing and hiking are also permitted. Pets are not allowed in the park.
Directions
From Kailua-Kona, head north on Highway 19 (Queen Kaʻahumanu Highway). The access road is between mile markers 82 and 83. Turn makai (toward the ocean) onto the gravel road and follow it to the parking area near the south end of the bay. The road is 2-wheel drive accessible.
