About

Cave Point Group Use Area is a day-use shelter managed by the Bureau of Reclamation at the northern tip of Canyon Ferry Reservoir, approximately 30 miles east of Helena, Montana. The shelter measures 30' x 36' and includes six picnic tables with capacity for up to 50 people, making it suitable for group gatherings and events. An accessible vault toilet is available on-site. Named for the historic settlement of Cavetown, the site connects visitors to the area's rich mining history. In the 1860s, a horse-drawn ferry at this location transported miners across the Missouri River to work the mining camps at Confederate Gulch and other nearby gold strikes. Today, the shelter provides access to Canyon Ferry Reservoir's extensive recreational opportunities including fishing, boating, swimming, and wildlife viewing. The shelter sits between the Big Belt and Elkhorn Mountain ranges and is accessed through Kim's Marina via County Road 430/Canyon Ferry Road. There is no electrical service at the shelter. Reservations can be made through Recreation.gov during the operating season. The facility closes at 10:00 p.m. nightly and no overnight camping or use is permitted.
