About
Horse Meadow Campground is a backcountry-style developed campground located at 7,600 feet elevation in the Kern River Ranger District of Sequoia National Forest. The facility offers 41 campsites available on a first-come, first-served basis, situated near Cherry Hill Road (22S12/23S10) along Salmon Creek. This campground is particularly popular with equestrian users, featuring horse corrals for overnight stock camping. The campground provides basic amenities including vault toilets, picnic tables, and fire pits at each site. However, no potable water is available, so visitors must bring adequate water supplies for drinking, cooking, and cleaning. Due to the area's black bear population, special food storage regulations are strictly enforced, and campers should use bear-proof containers or lockers. The maximum RV length is 22 feet due to the remote access road and campsite configurations. Recreational opportunities include fishing in Salmon Creek, hiking, wildlife viewing, and access to surrounding forest roads for mountain biking and exploration. The high elevation provides cooler temperatures during summer months and access to beautiful meadow scenery. Fire restrictions vary by season, and campfire permits are required when fires are allowed.
Directions
From Kernville, take Cherry Hill Road (22S12) northeast into the Sequoia National Forest. Follow signs to the campground via Forest Road 23S10. Road is unpaved and may require high clearance vehicles.
