About

Happy Valley Saddle sits at 6,200 feet elevation in the Saguaro Wilderness of the Rincon Mountains, offering the shortest backcountry camping experience in Saguaro National Park. Despite being the closest wilderness campground, reaching it requires a strenuous 3.9-mile hike with over 2,000 feet of elevation gain from the trailhead. The campground provides 3 primitive campsites, each accommodating up to 6 people, making it ideal for small groups seeking solitude in the mountains. The area sits in a transition zone between desert and mountain ecosystems. Water availability is highly variable and only reliable during wet periods, so hikers must carry adequate water supplies. The campground is equipped with a vault toilet and bear-proof containers for food storage. Many backpackers use Happy Valley Saddle as a staging point for ascending Rincon Peak or as a destination for a challenging overnight trip. Backcountry permits are required and cost $8 per night ($4 with senior or access pass), with reservations available up to 3 months in advance through Recreation.gov. The area is known for numerous dangerous dead pine trees and experiences winter storms that can bring snow to these elevations. Summer temperatures at lower elevations regularly exceed 100°F, making early morning starts essential. All water should be treated before consumption, and campers must pack out everything they bring in.

Directions

Accessible via multiple trailheads. The most popular route is from Douglas Spring Trailhead (east end of Speedway Boulevard, accessible 24 hours) or Tanque Verde Ridge Trailhead (within Javelina Picnic Area on the scenic loop drive, accessible 7:00 a.m. to sunset). The hike is 3.9 miles one-way with 2,000+ feet of elevation gain. Alternative access via Miller Creek or Turkey Creek Trailheads requires driving north from I-10 exit 297 on USFS Route 35, though these involve additional mileage through Forest Service lands.
