About
Located at 7,219 feet elevation within El Morro National Monument, this nine-site campground provides a peaceful base for exploring the historic inscriptions and natural features of the monument. The campground operates year-round on a first-come, first-served basis with no reservation system and no fees. Each site includes a graveled tent pad, picnic table, and ground grill for fires, though seasonal fire restrictions may apply. Water availability is seasonal at El Morro Campground. During warmer months, potable water is available at spigots centrally located along the campground loop road. Once overnight temperatures begin reaching freezing, typically in late fall, water is turned off for the season and campers must bring their own supply. Two vault toilets serve the campground year-round. There are no showers, hookups, or dump station facilities. The campground accommodates RVs, trailers, and tents, though the length limit for all RVs and trailers is 27 feet overall, measured from the front of the truck to the end of the trailer. One site, #5, is handicapped accessible. Campground regulations limit stays to 14 days per calendar year, with a maximum of eight people, two tents, and two vehicles per site. Pets are allowed on leash. At this elevation, winters can be cold and snowy with average snowfall of 40 inches per year, while summers are warm with afternoon thunderstorms from mid-July through mid-September.
