McGaffey Campground is situated in what was once the historic railroad logging and sawmill town of McGaffey. Built in 1937, this well-established campground lies west of the Continental Divide in the Zuni Mountains at an elevation of approximately 8,000 feet. As the largest campground on the Mt. Taylor Ranger District, it offers 29 campsites, 21 picnic sites, and 3 group sites. Mature ponderosa pine trees provide scenic settings and ample shade throughout the campground, while small hills offer natural privacy between sites. A volunteer host is present during the operating season. The campground provides access to local trails for hiking and mountain biking. The Oso and Page overnight sites can be accessed by following the road past the entrance and staying to the right. Campers should pay attention to road conditions and vehicle capabilities before driving off the main road. The area holds significant historical value from its railroad logging heritage. Visitors are encouraged to be respectful of this historic legacy while exploring the surrounding Cibola National Forest. The campground is conveniently located just 8 miles south of Fort Wingate off State Road 400.
Directions
Take Exit 33 from I-40 east of Gallup, then drive south through Fort Wingate. Continue 8 more miles on SR 400 to the campground entrance on the southwest side of the road.
