About

Dumbarton Quarry Campground on the Bay, located within Coyote Hills Regional Park in Fremont, represents a remarkable transformation from a former industrial quarry into East Bay Regional Park District's first full-service campground. Opening in 2021 after decades of planning, this 45-acre facility sits along the eastern shore of San Francisco Bay at the site of the former Dumbarton Quarry, which operated from the 1950s through 2007 and once reached 320 feet below sea level, making it the lowest human-made elevation in North America. The campground offers 63 campsites accommodating tents, RVs, and bike campers. Sixty sites are paved with full hookups including water, sewer, and 50-amp electric service, while three unpaved sites provide water only. Modern amenities include two bathroom buildings with hot showers, a camp store, an amphitheater for programs, a playground, WiFi access, picnic tables at each site, and fire pits. The campground connects directly to miles of scenic trails in Coyote Hills Regional Park, providing access to marshlands, grassland-covered hills, and views of San Francisco Bay. Nearby attractions include Ardenwood Historic Farm, Mission Peak Regional Preserve, and Don Edwards National Wildlife Refuge. This urban campground serves as a convenient base for exploring the South Bay, offering modern conveniences while maintaining access to natural areas rich with wildlife and 2,000 years of Tuibun Ohlone history. The kiosk operates with seasonal hours, and the gate remains open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily.
