About

Tucked away high atop Cerro Noroeste in the Mt. Pinos Ranger District, Campo Alto Campground provides end-of-the-road privacy in a fragrant Jeffrey pine grove at 8,250 feet. The spacious sites accommodate tents and modest-sized RVs up to 30 feet. Each site includes a picnic table and fire ring. Vault toilets are provided, but there is no potable water, so campers must bring their own supply. The campground serves as a basecamp for hiking into the Chumash Wilderness via the Vincent Tumameit Trail, which departs near the campground entrance. Views extend to the Carrizo Plain, Cuyama Valley, San Joaquin Valley, and Sespe ranges. The remote location offers excellent stargazing with minimal light pollution. Nearby Pine Mountain Club (3 miles) and Frazier Park (25 miles) provide fuel, restaurants, and supplies. Fishing and swimming opportunities are within 30 minutes. The campground operates on a pack-in/pack-out trash policy.

Directions

From I-5, take the Frazier Park/Mountain Park Road exit in Lebec. Go west 10 miles to Mil Potrero Road and turn right. Turn left at the Mil Potrero Ranger Station onto Cerro Noroeste Road (Forest Road 9N27) and proceed 6 miles to the end at the top of Mt. Abel.
