About
Black Oak Campground sits at 4,400 feet elevation in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Range, within walking distance of Stumpy Meadows Lake on the Eldorado National Forest. This group camping facility offers four sites: one RV site accommodating up to 75 people and three tent-only sites for groups of 25 or 50. Each site is equipped with picnic and serving tables, grills, and a campfire circle, making it ideal for larger gatherings. Stumpy Meadows Lake is the main attraction, with crystal-clear waters and a strict 5-mph speed limit that creates a peaceful environment for swimming, kayaking, canoeing, and paddleboarding. The lake is regularly stocked with rainbow trout from May through August, providing excellent fishing opportunities. The surrounding Eldorado National Forest features over 400 miles of hiking trails and a Mediterranean-style climate with warm, dry summers and cold, wet winters. The campground provides vault toilets and an on-site dump station. Bears are active in the area, requiring proper food storage. The forest enforces a maximum 14-day camping limit per calendar year across all Eldorado National Forest campgrounds. Access is via Wentworth Springs Road from Georgetown, crossing the dam at Stumpy Meadows Lake before reaching the campground.
Directions
From Georgetown, head northeast on Main Street/Wentworth Springs Road toward Orleans Street. Continue on Wentworth Springs Road for 17 miles and cross the dam at Stumpy Meadows Lake. Continue 1 mile to the campground.
