About

Perched at 6,650 feet above the Sespe Wilderness, Pine Mountain Campground offers a retreat into the cooler pine forests of Los Padres National Forest. The campground consists of seven tent-only sites arranged in a circular layout around a central open area. Jeffrey pine, sugar pine, and white fir trees provide shade and a quintessential mountain atmosphere. On clear days, views extend to the Channel Islands in the distance. This is a primitive campground with vault toilets, picnic tables, and fire rings at each site, but no potable water. Campers must bring all drinking water. The remote location means no cell service and emergency services are miles away. Wildlife in the area includes deer, bear, coyote, and various bird species including woodpeckers and chickadees. Lucky visitors may spot California condors soaring overhead. Nearby recreation includes the Boulder Canyon Trail (23W03) and several trails departing from Reyes Peak Campground just a mile up the road, including Chorro Grande Trail and Raspberry Spring Trail. Day trips south along Highway 33 lead to Piedra Blanca trailhead and Rose Valley Falls.

Directions

From Highway 33, turn right at the Pine Mountain Summit turnoff (Forest Road 6N06) at mile marker 42.50. Follow the partially paved road 4.7 miles to the campground on the right.
