The campground is currently closed for the season and expected to open May 22, 2026, weather permitting. The RV dump and fill station is closed for the 2026 season. Typical operating season runs late May through early October.

An Air Quality Alert for wildfire smoke has been issued by the following agencies: Puget Sound Clean Air Agency Olympic Region Clean Air Agency An Air Quality Alert has been issued for King, Kitsap, Pierce, Snohomish, and Thurston Counties through 5pm Wednesday August 5 due to expected wildfire smoke from regional fires. Air quality conditions are expected to worsen throughout the day today as smoke begins to mix down to the surface. Particulate matter (PM2.5) concentrations may reach UNHEALTHY FOR SENSITIVE GROUPS. When air quality is UNHEALTHY FOR SENSITIVE GROUPS, individuals with health concerns and pre-existing conditions should reduce exposure and take precautions. This means limiting time outside, avoiding strenuous activity, and following tips for cleaner indoor air. About
Cougar Rock Group Campground is located on the southwest side of Mount Rainier National Park, conveniently positioned near Paradise, the park's most popular destination. At 3,180 feet elevation, the campground sits adjacent to the Nisqually River and is surrounded by thick old-growth forest. From camp, experienced hikers can access the 93-mile Wonderland Trail that encircles the park. The campground offers five group sites designed for tent camping only. Each site accommodates between 12 and 40 people with a maximum of 5 passenger vehicles per site. Sites feature fire grates, picnic tables, and access to flush toilets and drinking water. An on-site amphitheater hosts ranger-led interpretive programs during the camping season. The National Park Inn and General Store at Longmire, just 2 miles away, provides food service and supplies including firewood. Summers are dry and cool with daytime temperatures in the 60-80°F range, though weather can be variable. All group sites require advance reservations through Recreation.gov.
