About
White Sandy Campground sits on the western shore of Hauser Lake, approximately 15 miles northeast of Helena, Montana. Managed by the Bureau of Land Management, this 32-site facility offers spacious, level gravel parking pads that accommodate both RVs and tents. The campground is divided into two main loops, with the east loop containing 24 sites and the west loop housing 5 group sites near the pavilion. Every campsite features lake and mountain views, with fire rings, grill grates, and picnic tables provided at each site.
The recreation area includes extensive day-use facilities with a concrete boat launch and courtesy dock, a sandy beach area for swimming, and a fish cleaning station. Vault toilets are conveniently located in each camping loop as well as near the boat launch and beach. Potable water and garbage service are available throughout the campground. A large ramada/pavilion with power and lights can be reserved for group events. The campground has three accessible sites with paved parking spurs.
The surrounding shrub-steppe landscape consists primarily of sagebrush and bunch grasses, with scattered ponderosa pine and deciduous trees providing minimal shade. The setting offers excellent opportunities for boating, fishing, swimming, wildlife viewing, hiking, and mountain biking. Black Sandy State Park is located just a quarter mile away and offers an RV dump station for $5. Trails throughout the Hauser Lake Recreation Area provide access to additional fishing sites, hunting areas, and scenic viewpoints of the Big Belt Mountains.
Directions
From Helena drive north or from Great Falls drive south on I-15 to the Lincoln Road exit. Turn east on Lincoln Road and continue to the T-intersection with Hauser Dam Road. Turn left and continue north about 4 miles until you reach White Sandy Recreation Area on the right. Black Sandy State Park is a quarter mile beyond White Sandy.
