About

Court Sheriff Campground is located at the very north end of Canyon Ferry Reservoir, 30 miles east of Helena, Montana, along Montana Highway 284. The campground sits between the Big Belt and Elkhorn mountain ranges and is named for Court Sheriff, who moved to Montana from Illinois in 1865 to work the mines and later established a general store, livery stable, and hotel at Canyon Ferry by 1883. The well-developed campground features 48 paved campsites, with most sites located along the water. Sites include picnic tables and fire rings. During the operating season, the campground provides vault toilets, potable water, trash and recycling containers, and a campground host. The campground is very popular due to its lakefront location and proximity to Helena. Canyon Ferry Reservoir is a 35,000-acre lake that offers exceptional fishing for walleye, rainbow trout, perch, and ling. Water activities include swimming, boating, sailing, jet skiing, windsurfing, water skiing, canoeing, and kayaking in the many quiet backwater bays. The nearby Shannon boat ramp provides lake access. The reservoir area also supports wildlife viewing opportunities. Check-in time is 5:00 p.m. and check-out is 4:00 p.m. Campsites are limited to one camping unit per site, and stays are limited to 14 consecutive days.

Directions

Heading north along MT Highway 12/287, drive north to Spokane Creek Road and turn right at the yellow flashing light. Follow Spokane Creek Road for 4.6 miles and turn right onto County Road 430/Canyon Ferry Road. Continue to Court Sheriff Campground, which will be on the right.
