About

White Azalea Campground is a small, rustic campground nestled at 3,500 feet elevation in the Mokelumne River Canyon Area of Eldorado National Forest. With only 6 tent sites, it offers an intimate camping experience near Salt Springs Reservoir and the Mokelumne River. The campground serves as a gateway to the Mokelumne Wilderness, with trailhead access available at Salt Springs Reservoir. Restroom cleaning is provided from mid-May to mid-November, though no garbage service is available in winter. The campground is located 38 miles east of Jackson on Highway 88, then 8.5 miles south on Forest Road 92 (Ellis Road), and 3 miles east on Forest Road 8N50 (Salt Springs Road). While no potable water is available on-site, water from the river can be treated for use. The area provides opportunities for river fishing, swimming, and hiking. Car-top boat launching is possible at Salt Springs Reservoir, though access to the water is difficult and boating can be hazardous during windy afternoons. Bear activity is common in the area, so proper food storage is essential.

Directions

From Jackson, drive 38 miles east on Highway 88. Turn south on Forest Road 92 (Ellis Road) for 8.5 miles, then east on Forest Road 8N50 (Salt Springs Road) for 3 miles.
