About

Wagon Flat Camp sits in a canyon bottom surrounded by oak trees along La Brea Creek in the Santa Barbara Ranger District of Los Padres National Forest. At 1,411 feet elevation, the area features the characteristic grassy hills and oak woodlands of this section of the backcountry. The creek flows intermittently, so reliable water is not guaranteed. This site has a complex recent history. The 2009 La Brea Fire burned through the area, followed by severe flooding during the 2011 winter storms that washed out the access road. The Forest Service has not undertaken repairs, effectively converting what was once a drive-in campground into a remote backcountry destination. Visitors now reach the camp only by hiking, mountain biking, or horseback. The area offers proximity to hunting opportunities, mountain biking trails, and OHV routes. Wildlife including bears and mountain lions have been reported in the vicinity. Due to fire restrictions in the Santa Barbara Front Country, campfires may be prohibited depending on current conditions.

Directions

From Santa Barbara, take Highway 154 north. Access requires traveling toward the La Brea Creek area southeast of Buckhorn Ridge in the Santa Barbara Ranger District. The vehicle access road is closed due to flood damage, so the campground must be reached by foot, bicycle, or horseback from the nearest accessible road or trailhead.
