About

The Upper Ford Ranger Station is a historic cabin rental situated near the Yaak River at an elevation of 2,984 feet within the Rocky Mountains in Kootenai National Forest. This remote cabin was built in 1926 and served as the heart of the Upper Ford Ranger District until 1942, when it was combined with the Yaak Ranger District and became a remote work center. The 900-square-foot cabin sleeps 9 comfortably with one queen bed, two twin beds, two futon couches that fold into double beds, and a futon chair that folds into a single bed. The fully furnished kitchen includes a propane stove, refrigerator, and heater, along with a picnic-style table, bench, chairs, and table settings for 8 with all necessary kitchen tools and cleaning gear. The cabin is not wired for electricity or plumbed for water, and features an outdoor pit toilet. Guests must bring their own water as no potable water sources are available. The cabin is located on the slope of Clark Mountain in the Purcell Range above the Yaak River drainage. Fishing in the Yaak River and nearby streams can yield a variety of trout, kokanee salmon, mountain whitefish, and other species. The area offers big game hunting, hiking trails in the Northwest Peaks Scenic Area, and equestrian trails near the cabin. Winter activities include skiing, snowmobiling, and snowshoeing. The heavily forested area is home to grizzly bears, wolves, elk, deer, and various smaller mammals and birds.
