Three Mile Campground

Three Mile Campground occupies a scenic position on Rock Harbor Channel, roughly 3 miles from Rock Harbor along the trails leading to Mount Franklin. This backcountry campground serves as a popular first-night destination for hikers beginning multi-day treks along the Greenstone Ridge or exploring the eastern end of Isle Royale. The campground can also be reached by canoe, kayak, or private boat, with a dock providing 9-foot depth under normal conditions for overnight mooring. The campground offers 8 three-sided wooden shelters and several individual tent sites, all operating on a first-come, first-served basis for parties of 6 or fewer. Three group tent sites are available for parties of 7-10 people but require advance reservation and a $25 permit fee. Facilities include seasonal composting toilets and non-potable water that must be filtered and treated before drinking. Bear-proof food storage lockers are installed for securing food and scented items. Campfires are not permitted; only self-contained camp stoves are allowed. A one-night consecutive stay limit applies from June 1 through September 17, making Three Mile primarily a waypoint rather than a base camp. Pets are prohibited throughout Isle Royale, and the terrain is rough and uneven with no accessible facilities. All trash must be packed out, and visitors should bring their own toilet paper.

Three Mile Campground is located on Rock Harbor Channel off of the Rock Harbor and Mount Franklin Trails, approximately 3 miles from Rock Harbor. Access is by foot, canoe, kayak, or private boat.
