Rock Harbor Campground

Open

Open for camping. As of mid-May 2026, many Rock Harbor hub facilities remain closed for the season including the visitor center, lodge, potable water, showers, and trash disposal. Scattered snow and ice persist in campgrounds. Wolf activity is high; proper food storage is critical. One-night stay limit in effect June 1 through September 21.

About

Rock Harbor Campground is located at the primary visitor hub on Isle Royale's northeast end, accessible via the Ranger III ferry from Houghton, Isle Royale Queen IV from Copper Harbor, seaplane, or private boat. The campground serves as the gateway to Isle Royale's extensive backcountry trail system, connecting to the Rock Harbor and Tobin Harbor trails that lead deeper into the island's wilderness. The campground features 23 sites total: 20 first-come, first-served individual sites and 3 group sites that require advance reservations for parties of 7 or more. Nine three-sided shelters are available on a first-come basis. A dock with depths of 3-12 feet accommodates boats, with additional overnight marina fees. Small-party camping is free with a required backcountry permit. Due to Isle Royale's remote wilderness character, campers should arrive fully prepared. Self-contained stoves are required as campfires are not permitted. All visitors must practice proper food storage due to active wolf populations. The seasonal amenities in the Rock Harbor developed area include flush toilets, coin-operated showers, a camp store, dump station, and potable water, though availability varies with operational status.
