About
Stockton Pass Campground lies off the beaten path in the high desert of the Pinaleño Mountains within the Coronado National Forest. At 5,600 feet elevation, it occupies the apex of Stockton Pass along scenic SR 266, providing sweeping views of the mountain range's highest peaks, Sulphur Springs Valley, and the distant Galiuro and Santa Catalina ranges. The setting mixes desert grassland with oak woodlands, attracting deer, black bear, and mountain lions. The campground offers single sites ($15/night), double sites ($30/night), and a group site accommodating up to 30 people. Amenities include vault toilets, bear-proof trash containers, picnic tables, pedestal grills, and campfire rings. No potable water is available; campers must bring their own supply. Trailers are limited to under 22 feet and RVs to under 40 feet. The Shake Trail #309 begins at the campground and winds through the high desert landscape before climbing to the Swift Trail. This is black bear country; all food must be stored in bear-proof containers or locked vehicles. Check-in is 2:00 p.m. and check-out is noon, with quiet hours from 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. Pack and saddle stock are not permitted in the camping area.
Directions
From Safford, Arizona: Take US 191 south for 17 miles. Turn right onto AZ 266 and continue 12 miles to Stockton Pass Campground at mile marker 116.5, past the second cattle guard. From Tucson: Take I-10 east for 90 miles, take exit 352 for US 191 and turn left toward Safford. Drive 17 miles north, turn left on AZ 266, and continue 12 miles to the campground.
