About

Hospital Flat Campground occupies a historic mountain meadow in the Pinaleño Mountains of southeastern Arizona's Coronado National Forest. In the 1880s, this site served as a field hospital for ailing soldiers from nearby Fort Grant, who came to escape the brutal desert heat and recover in the cool mountain air. Officers and their families later used it as a summer retreat, drawn by the wildflower-carpeted meadow and small creek that traverses the area. Today the campground remains a popular refuge for recreationists seeking relief from the low desert. Sites include picnic tables and vault toilets, but campers must bring their own water as none is available. The elevation provides pleasant summer temperatures when the valleys below are sweltering. Access is via the Swift Trail (AZ 366), a scenic but winding mountain road with tight switchbacks. Vehicles and trailers longer than 22 feet are not recommended. The road closes seasonally from November 15 through April 15, and early or late snowfall can extend this closure. Pack and saddle stock are prohibited in the campground.
