Special Weather Statement issued May 24 at 5:55AM EDT by NWS Caribou ME

5:55 AM — 8:00 PM

* The warm air temperatures this weekend in the mid 60s to low 70s may cause people to underestimate the dangers of the cold water temperatures which are currently only around 50 degrees on Moosehead Lake and in the middle to upper 50s on smaller lakes and rivers. * The cold water temperatures can quickly cause hypothermia to anyone immersed in the water. According to the Maine Warden Service, when the water temperature is below 60 degrees, the average submerged person could lose dexterity within minutes and be unable to accomplish simple tasks. Anyone on small boats, canoes or kayaks should plan accordingly if recreating this weekend and use extreme caution to avoid this threat. Paddle smart from the start and always wear your life jacket!

About

Seawall Campground offers a more peaceful Acadia experience on the west side of Mount Desert Island, often called the "quiet side." Located about 18 miles from Bar Harbor and 4 miles south of Southwest Harbor, the campground provides easy access to Echo Lake for swimming, fishing, and paddling, as well as numerous hiking trails and the scenic 27-mile Park Loop Road. The campground features 202 sites spread across several loops, including walk-in tent sites (10-300 feet from parking), standard drive-up sites for tents and smaller RVs, and group tent areas. While some sites accommodate RVs up to 35 feet, the campground was not designed for large rigs and maneuvering can be challenging. All sites are wooded and offer fire rings and picnic tables. Amenities include seasonal flush toilets, potable water, a dump station, and trash collection. Showers are not available in the campground, and portable showers are prohibited, but fee-based shower facilities are located about a mile away. All reservations must be made through Recreation.gov, with 90% of sites released six months in advance on the first of each month and the remaining 10% released 14 days ahead.

Directions

From Boston, take I-95 north to Augusta, then Route 3 east to Ellsworth and Mount Desert Island. At the first traffic light on Mount Desert Island, bear right onto Route 102. Continue approximately 11.5 miles through Somesville and Southwest Harbor. As you leave Southwest Harbor, keep right on Route 102 through Bass Harbor, then keep left onto Route 102A.
